Why This Standard Chain Matters

Australian structural steel projects are governed by a linked chain of standards — not a single one. AS 4100 is the design standard called up by the National Construction Code. But design compliance alone is not enough: steelwork designed to AS 4100 must be fabricated and erected to AS/NZS 5131. In turn, AS/NZS 5131 requires steel products to meet AS/NZS 3678 (plates) and AS/NZS 3679 (bars and sections), with welding complying with AS/NZS 1554.

Pillar 1: Design — AS 4100

AS 4100 is the complying standard for structural steel design in Australian buildings under the National Construction Code. Where imported materials are involved, AS 4100 sets out specific requirements for material identification, test certification and traceability.
