Why Hot Dip Galvanizing Works
Paint protects steel by sealing it; once the film is scratched, rust starts underneath. Zinc works in two ways:
-
Barrier Protection: Seals the steel from the environment.
-
Sacrificial Protection: When damaged, the zinc around the scratch corrodes first to protect the steel beside it.
Because the coating is metallurgically bonded (not just applied on the surface), it does not peel off under impact and does not need to be touched up every few years. For outdoor steel frames, this means no maintenance painting for 20 to 30 years.
⚠️ One Critical Rule: All cutting, drilling, and welding must be finished before dipping. A hole drilled after galvanizing leaves bare steel inside, which is where corrosion begins.
🌍 Coating Thickness by Environment
| Environment Class | Recommended Coating | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|
| C1 – C2 (Indoor & Dry) | 45 – 65 microns | Warehouses, workshops, covered structures away from moisture. |
| C3 (Urban & Industrial) | 65 – 85 microns | City buildings, light industry, areas with moderate pollution. |
| C4 (Coastal & Chemical) | 85 – 115 microns | Ports, seaside plants, water treatment, fertilizer facilities. |
| C5 (Severe Marine/Heavy Industry) | 115 – 200 microns | Offshore, shipyards, heavy chemical exposure (often with topcoat). |
(Tell us your site location and we will recommend the optimal coating class. For visible frames, a duplex system of galvanizing plus a color top coat gives both protection and appearance.)
🛠️ Designed for Dipping, Not Just for Strength
To guarantee a flawless finish, our frames are engineered specifically for the galvanizing process:
-
Vent & Drain Holes: Every hollow section gets holes at the highest and lowest points, so air escapes and zinc flows out completely.
-
No Closed Chambers: Sealed boxes are never left in the design; trapped air can burst the section, and trapped liquid can drip for days.
-
Distortion Control: Thin plates and long members are dipped in a controlled sequence; asymmetry is avoided to prevent bowing.
-
Thread & Machined Faces: Threads are protected or re-tapped after dipping; machined contact faces are masked so fits are not changed by the zinc layer.
-
Marking Before Dipping: Piece marks are applied with a method that survives the zinc bath, matching the packing list on site.

🏗️ Where Galvanized Frames Pay Off Most
-
Coastal & Port Structures: Salt spray attacks paint quickly, while zinc handles it for decades.
-
Water Treatment & Chemical Plants: Constant humidity and chemical vapors make repainting expensive and frequent.
-
Agriculture & Livestock Buildings: Ammonia from animals destroys ordinary coatings; galvanizing is the standard answer.
-
Cold Storage & Food Plants: Washdown water and hygiene rules make a maintenance-free coating invaluable.
-
Remote Sites: If sending a painting crew back to site costs more than the steel, galvanizing is the cheaper choice over the building's life.
💰 Life Cycle Cost: Galvanizing vs. Painting
| Parameter | Painted Frame | Galvanized Frame |
|---|---|---|
| First Maintenance | Within 5 to 8 years | None required |
| Full Repaint | Within 12 to 15 years | None required |
| Extra Costs | Scaffolding, surface prep, labor, downtime | None |
| Total 20-30 Yr Cost | Much higher (second coat often costs more than original) | Lowest total cost (Wins in C3, C4, and C5 environments) |
🔬 How We Control Galvanizing Quality
-
Coating Thickness: Measured with a magnetic gauge at set points per member; results recorded with the batch number.
-
Adhesion & Visual: Checked by knife/tap test for runs, lumps, bare patches, and ash inclusions before packing.
-
Repairs: Small bare spots from handling are repaired with a zinc-rich compound to the same standard as the bath coating, and recorded.
-
Anti-White Rust: Members are stacked with spacers so air circulates, preventing white rust (a surface film caused by tightly packed wet steel).

🏢 About Our Company
Hangzhou FAMOUS Steel Engineering Co., Ltd. (FASECbuildings) was established in 2000. With 1,200–1,300 employees, an 8,000-ton monthly capacity, and annual sales of USD 500–600 million, we supply galvanized frames to over 60 countries across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia.
We hold ISO 9001 and CE marked fabrication to EN 1090, and our welders are certified to EN ISO 9606. Fabrication and galvanizing are planned together, so vent holes, drain holes, and dipping sequences are decided at the drawing stage—not discovered in the zinc bath.
